Policy and Guidelines
The objectives of rescue are to re-introduce unwanted and abandoned Great Pyrenees as valuable family and community members; to spay/neuter all dogs that come into rescue; to rescue Great Pyrenees from pounds and shelters; to aid owners in recovery of lost or stolen Great Pyrenees; to provide breed education and understanding of the Great Pyrenees dog; and attempt to rescue neglected and/or abused Great Pyrenees.
When a dog comes into rescue it is given a complete health check by a veterinarian, which includes heartworm check, Fecal and vaccines if needed. All dogs are spayed/neutered and placed on a heartworm preventative and Frontline. The dogs spend at least two weeks in the rescuers home for recovery and temperament testing. The dog is then ready for placement with a person or family who has passed our adoption screening process.
Persons interested in adopting a Pyrenees must complete an adoption application and a home check/interview with the rescue person. They come to the rescue person's home to meet the dogs and get hands on experience and education about the breed. After a person or family is matched with a dog, an adoption agreement is signed and the adoption fee paid. The cost of a rescue dog depends on the extent of the veterinary care. We then follow up to make sure that the dog is happy and healthy in his new home.
Placing dogs is only part of our mission. We want to educate and counsel all Great Pyrenees owners and be a strong support unit. We have a Pyr-Nic once or twice a year for all The Pyrs and their families to come and have a fun day and have the chance to meet and talk with other Pyr owners.
